Nemunas Delta Reg. P.

Ethnographic heritage

From the point of view of ethnographic heritage the Nemunas Delta regional park is unique. It is a part of the historical Lithuania Minor region, which belonged to North West European cultural province, as a Germanic-Scandinavian cultural influence region. Also, the territory of the park includes multifarious parts of Lithuania Minor which reflects peculiarities of traditional life of various regions of the country. This is what the Nemunas Delta regional park makes different from Pajūris, Rambynas regional parks, the Curonian Spit national park the heritage of which is specific to that particular region. Unfortunately, historical circumstances of the region were rather dramatic very often . After the II World War, the old inhabitants almost disappeared who were the link with the tradition, preservers of cultural heritage, but either died in the war, emigrated or were sent into exile during the Stalin times. The region was completely changed, destroying the old buildings, replacing old agricultural and land ownership systems, which differed from those in Lithuania. Despite that cultural traces are rather strong and tangible even though very damaged. The cultural heritage of the specific cultural region is reflected in the local architecture, graveyards and even in remaining technical monuments. Even in soviet time it was understood that unique heritage can be found here. Some objects and complexes were granted the status of protection, for example, Skirvytėlės village was called a village monument of the Republican significance. Unfortunately, the status itself did not guarantee protection that was needed so much. There were no active measures for conservation. Therefore the heritage was in the state of permanent fall into decay.
